Skin works better well-oiled

Grease is not the word when it comes to beauty oils.

Mention ‘skin’ and ‘oil’ and the ubiquitous response would probably be “ick”. The truth is, facial oils, the new buzzword in beauty, is one product that is actually perfect for all skin types – yes, even on oily skin.

Much like serums, facial oils penetrate into skin’s deeper layers. But while serums are water-based extractions of natural ingredients, facial oils are pure plant oil concentrates. Instead of leaving your skin looking shiny, they’re eagerly lapped up by the skin, won’t clog pores, leaving skin grease-free. It’s the best beauty arsenal to nourish skin from within. Rich in antioxidants, facial oils deliver serious results with essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids where needed while balancing skin’s sebum production.

But how does facial oil factor into your daily skin cleansing routine? There are two ways of enjoying its benefits. First, try mixing 2-3 drops of your favourite oil to your usual cream as a ‘moisturiser booster’; you’ll wake up to the effects the next day for skin that is soft and moisturised. If you’re using a serum, do this after the serum application. Oils can also sometimes be paired with a mask. At Clarins, parched skin benefits from a few drops of their Blue Orchid Face Oil mixed to the HydraQuench Mask to plump up skin’s hydration. The result is almost instantaneous.

Alternatively, skip the moisturiser and apply oil directly onto skin for optimal hydration. This works especially great if you have extremely dry and dehydrated skin. Melvita’s range of oils reads like your grandma’s kitchen pantry to address all kinds of skin concerns. Their argan oil in particular, favoured by the Berber women in Morocco, is an all-rounder that works to hydrate, nourish and repair many of skin’s concerns.

Should you use facial oils during the day? The beauty of facial oils is its flexibility, says Lisa Wilson of Trilogy, whose Certified Organic Rose Hip is a cult favourite. “Seasonal changes (when travelling to another country) and environmental stresses, amongst other things, can put our skin under stress. Facial oils can be applied daily or just when skin needs extra hydration and nourishment. Incorporating products with facial oils ensures your skin receives the benefits across your beauty regime.”
