Sony Music reaching out to indie music scene

August 30, 2012

Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia has agreed to sign a one song deal for the winner of the Song of The Year category.

Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia will be playing a pivotal role of supporting the local music scene at the VIMA MUSIC AWARDS 2013. Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia has graciously agreed to sign a 1 song deal for the winner of the Song of The Year category and also distribute a special VIMA Compilation that will feature 18 songs from the various winners of the awards platform.

VIMA, now in its 4th year, is the Independent Music Awards for Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei and honours talents and musicians who are independent or unsigned. This time round, VIMA 2013 will be opening submissions to an additional country, Indonesia, in a move that is seen to position the awards platform as the most important in South-east Asia.

“The boundaries of mainstream and independent music is slowly blurring and VIMA is increasingly seen as the benchmark to recognise unique and creative music talents across the region. Our team up with Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia will encourage and motivate independent musicians to aim higher and to create music that is a natural progression into the mainstream market. It is a fantastic alliance of sorts and we hope to work closely with Sony Music Entertainment in uncovering the next big thing,” said Siva  Zaphod Chandran, founder of VIMA and COO of Bite Media.

“VIMA is a fine example that musical talents locally or regionally can be exposed. It’s great that Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia can be part of VIMA 2013. We have always been finding ways to reach out to the indie scene and with this VIMA platform we can discover more musical talents that is waiting to explode into the mainstream (crossover) market.

“We will work on the winner of the Song of Year by reaching out with our established conventional ways in supporting an artist,” said Adrian Lim, Managing Director of Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia.

VIMA 2013 is now calling for submissions from musicians from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. All songs and music videos released between Sept 1, 2011 until Nov 1, 2012 will be eligible to participate.

All links and updates can be found on the VIMA 2013 Facebook group as well as the Bite My Music website. The closing date for submission is Nov 2, after which the final nominees list will be unveiled on Nov 15.

The awards is also unique for allowing submissions from bedroom DJs, college acts, concert performances and even demo versions. It also champions singles rather than albums and recognizes songs of all languages in all genres including electronica,hip-hop,metal,pop,dance,rock and mash-ups/remixes.

30% of the total scores are determined by public voting and 70% of the scores will be determined by global judges.

The VIMA 2013 MUSIC AWARDS is expected to be held by the end of February 2013. The inductees of the VIMA HALL OF FAME were also recently unveiled via the social media platforms to include a posthumous award for Paul Ponnudorai as well as new inductees Poetic Ammo, Azmyl Yunor and Jeff Siah (founder of Positive Tone & VR1).
