PETALING JAYA: Is your son good at telling jokes? Does your daughter have a thing with words? Or do you just want your kid to get out of the house over the holiday?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then consider putting your children on the path to stand-up comedy with PJ Live Arts’s Junior Jokers programme this November.

Run as an intensive three-week workshop from Nov 19 to Dec 8 at PJLA, kids under the age of 18 will learn how to make people laugh under the tutelage of local funnyman, Phoon Chi Ho.

“It will help kids to ‘stand on their own two feet’ in terms of creativity, writing, stage presence and basic performance skills,” Phoon told FMT.

He added that these traits would come in handy when they get older, especially if they intend to venture into comedy.

Conducted in English, the workshop will also look at developing your children’s memory, timing, delivery and give them the courage to speak in front a large audience.

Disagreeing that comedy was solely for adults, Phoon, who is also a member of the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians (MACC) said that anyone was capable of making people laugh.

“It’s a matter of giving them a formula to work with, and they can use this formula to create the funnies through their own life experiences,” he said.

A regular at The Comedy Club KL, Phoon added that the workshop would also help budding comedians to know how to make good jokes; no laughing matter.

“Comedy is serious business here, and our small ‘industry really needs some good quality comedians and material to keep the options and comedy shows going. Now, we have too many shows, but too little capable comedians,” he said.

Junior Jokers classes will be held from 10am to 12pm for ages 10-12, 1pm to 3pm for ages 13-15 and 4pm to 6pm for ages 16 to 18 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Kids will also have the chance to demonstrate their material at an open mic session, every Saturday at 1pm.

Priced at RM250, those who register before Nov 11 or are PJ Live Card holders will get to come in at RM234.

To register, call 03-79600439 from 12pm to 7pm daily.
