Burger Truck @ Tanjung Bungah

May 31, 2013

Fried Onions adds oomph!

Whenever we go to Penang, we’ll always pay a late night visit to this unassuming burger truck. Set in a leafy, hilly area with cosy little houses it has the added appeal of having a hint of salt in the air.

This is Tanjong Bungah. Greasy goodness and ocean breeze? Wild horses couldn’t keep us away.

This unnamed burger truck has been around these parts for about 30 years – yes, since the 1980s! The Australian RAF were in the area and were their main clientele until the army moved out in 1986. Now the truck sits on Jalan Sungai Kelian, down aways from the Esso station, across the road from the fruit stalls. They sell what appears to be run-of-the-mill street burgers, until you peer a little closer.

A veritable mountain of fried onions and cabbage are on standby on the grill and this, my friends, is what MAKES their burgers.

Fried until soft but still retaining a slight bite, this is a burger topping us mainlanders can only dream of. We’ve even heard of someone being so crestfallen that they were out of onions one night that she actually went to a nearby store to buy onions for them! You can even get a sandwich of just this bewitching fried onion mix slapped into a hot dog bun.

The old man running the grill has a look of quiet concentration on his face. Watching him work is pretty cool as everything is by feel. He barely even glances at their specially made patties as he tests their doneness by pressing on his spatula lightly, sometimes even closing his eyes. His wife and daughter scurry about assembling and wrapping the burgers as orders come in – you can even order from your car!

My favourite part of this truck is that they have the one holy condiment that 99% (not proven) of other stalls don’t: mustard. Absolutely yummy with the onions. If you’re feeling healthy, order a carb-free burger or hot dog and they’ll wrap it up in egg instead of a bun.

Address: Along Jalan Sungai Kelian. If you’re driving towards Feringghi from Georgetown, keep your eyes peeled for a left turn off Jalan Tanjong Bungah into Jalan Sungai kelian after the Caltex.

Opens: Daily: 6pm – midnight

Pros: You can order from your car – drive-thru convenience!

Cons: Once they run out of onions, they’re out. Unless you run off and buy some more for them.

Price Range: RM10
