Four hurt as explosion rips through mall

A local and a Nepalese worker and two passers-by were injured.

KUALA LUMPUR: Four people were injured when a gas explosion ripped through a shopping mall in Selangor early today.

The blast at the Empire Mall caused extensive damage and prompted authorities to evacuate some 300 people from a hotel located in the same building, said Mohamad Khairi Daud, fire and rescue chief of Subang Jaya district.

The blast was believed have been a gas explosion, he was quoted as saying by the Star newspaper.

A local and a Nepalese worker and two passers-by were injured. All four were sent to hospital for treatment.

Hundreds of search and rescue officers were checking the area to ensure that the structure of the building was safe, police said.
