The organisers of the rally say thousands is expected turn up for the Sept 30 rally.

PETALING JAYA: A big turnout is expected at a rally to oppose the the building of a petrochemical plant in Pengerang, Johor.

The organisers, Gabungan NGO Pengerang, said the rally on Sept 30 will be held at Dataran Sg Rengit.

The rally is to oppose the RM60 billion Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Project (Rapid), which involves massive sea reclamation and construction.

Gabungan NGO Pengerang treasurer Chua Peng Sian, said that all 15 hotels in Pengerang are fully booked for next Sunday.

“Only two resorts which is 5km away from the town still have rooms,” he said.

Groups that are joining the rally include Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH), Bukit Koman Anti-Cyanide committee and Himpunan Hijau, Chua said.

“We also glad to hear that about 1,000 Pengerang folks residing in Singapore plan to come back on Sept 30 for the rally,” he said.

“We are not against development but we want our towns to be protected. But in this case, the project will destroy the entire community.
