Perkasa to campaign for its ‘stalwarts’

 | April 3, 2013

The ultra Malay NGO's sec-gen says members will go all out to get non-Malay voters to help BN-friendly independents Ibrahim Ali and Zulkifli Noordin returned to power

PETALING JAYA: Right wing ultra-Malay organisation, Perkasa, will be campaigning for two of its office bearers – Ibrahim Ali and Zulkifli Noordin, said its secretary general Syed Hassan Syed Ali.

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali is Pasir Mas MP whereas its vice president Zulkifli Noordin is Kulim Bandar Baharu MP. Both are BN friendly Independents.

“Both of them have relayed their interest in defending their seats. Perkasa will assist in campaigning for them,” said Syed Hassan.

Kulim Bandar Baharu had about 30% non-Malay voters in 2008 whereas Pasir Mas had four percent.

When asked how Perkasa is going to get non-Malay voters to return both of them to power, given the fact that the group is seen as right wing group, Syed Hassan said they have a strategy.

“We will rope in those non-Malays who truly understand Perkasa and its cause,” said Syed Hassan.

He however did not name any prominent non-Malays who may be roped in by Perkasa to campaign for Ibrahim and Zulkifli.

Perkasa: Video was manipulated

Meanwhile when asked about the video featuring Zulkifli deriding Hindus and their faith, Syed Hassan said that Perkasa was “accustomed to such accusations”.

“Perkasa is innocent. The video was manipulated,” claimed Syed Hassan. “Some unscrupulous parties want to paint a bad image of Perkasa.”

Syed Hassan added that the video was recorded in 2007 when the Zulkifli was still with PAS.

In the 5:34 clip which went viral on social networking site, Facebook, Zulkifli made light of Hindu beliefs and mocked their practices.

Zulkifli described the Batu Caves Murugan statue, listed as the second tallest in the world by wikipedia, as “Tuhan Murugan tongkat 14 tingkat.”

His statements invoked the anger of the Indian NGOs, including political parties like PKR, MIC and DAP who lodged police reports against him. They also held a peaceful protest over the weekend in Brickfields.

Malay daily, Utusan Malaysia yesterday had published the Kulim Bandar Baharu MP’s apology to Hindus and Malaysians for his statements which he claimed was made in 2003.

In a related development, Penang DAP Socialist Youth assistant secretary, M Satees cast doubts on Zulkifli’s sincerity in offering the apology.

“The Murugan statue was unveiled during Thaipusam celebrations in 2006. How is it that Zulkifli claims he made those remarks about it being 14 storeys when the statue was not even built?

“I feel that Zulkifli Nordin is not sincere and lying in his statement of apology, claiming that he made those remarks in 2003,” said Satees in a press statement.
