Flash floods in Penang

 | April 1, 2014

A change in weather brings relief and flash floods on the island.

Flood (2)GEORGE TOWN: After suffering scorching heat and high humidity levels during the two-month dry spell, a two day heavy downpour was a much welcomed relief for Penangites.

The heavy rains caused flash floods across the island and knee level floods at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas this morning.

A photograph on Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s twitter account showed the flood outside the ground level arrival terminal.

In his twitter text message Lim said that he was “going back to the drawing board to resolve the problem”.

This is the third time in seven months the international airport has flooded during a heavy downpour.

An airport officer said that last night’s rain was recorded as a 62.2mm downpour and the 7am flood subsided two hours later.

“The airport’s ongoing renovation could be a cause, it may have affected the drainage system and water flow,” he said.

Meanwhile the heavy rains caused traffic congestion elsewhere on the island, during the morning rush hour.

The Meteorological Department forecasts rain for Penang until Friday.
