Umno chief arrested over comments on Low Yat brawl

Penang police chief confirms the arrest of Bagan Umno Division chief but declines to elaborate.


BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police today arrested Bagan Umno Division chief Shaikh Hussein Mydin with regard to comments made on the weekend brawl at the Low Yat Plaza in Kuala Lumpur.

He is the third person to have been held so far under the Sedition Act.

Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi confirmed the arrest when contacted by Bernama but declined to elaborate, saying the Inspector-General of Police would issue a statement.

Besides Dr Shaikh Hussein, police had also arrested under the Sedition Act, blogger ‘Papa Gomo’ also known as Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris and Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association president Mohd Ali Baharom, better known as Ali Tinju.

Penang Umno Liaison Committee secretary Musa Sheikh Fadzir said Dr Shaikh, who is also chairman of the Penang Umno Public Complaints Bureau, was held after he was asked to go to the Seberang Prai Tengah District Police headquarters to assist in the investigation into the case.

Musa had accompanied Dr Shaikh to the police station at about 2pm after which he was taken to Bukit Aman at about 4pm.
