August 26, 2015

Public Universities chairman advises students against being used by certain organisations and instead, concentrate on their studies.

PAUH PUTRA: University students found participating in the coming Bersih 4 illegal assembly are liable to face disciplinary action, in accordance with the university act and procedures.

Public Universities Vice-Chancellor/Rector Committee chairman Kamarudin Hussin said among measures which could be taken included suspension or expulsion from universities.

“(As such) Students should stay away from being used by certain parties or organisations not recognised by the government and should instead, concentrate on their studies,” he said when asked to comment on the involvement of university students in the assembly.

The home ministry yesterday announced that Bersih 4, which planned to hold an assembly at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday and Sunday, was an illegal organisation as it was not registered.

Kamaruddin, who is Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) vice-chancellor advised students to refer to their respective universities to obtain clear information before deciding to join street demonstrations such as those organised by Bersih 2.0.

He said UniMAP students had, from the onset been reminded and prohibited from taking part in demonstrations with political overtones.

“The UniMAP Student Affairs Department has been instructed to provide information relating to any assembly and scenario taking place in the country, as well as monitor and take action against students who infringe upon the university act,” he added.
