PETALING JAYA: The Johor Baru High Court has granted activist Khalid Mohd Ismath interim bail today, former Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) secretary-general S Arutchelvan has announced.

The court also granted the prosecution the adjournment of the bail application to November 11.

With the interim bail, Khalid must agree to surrender his passport to the authorities and also report to the nearest police station on October 30 and November 10.

The interim bail, fixed at RM5,000 per charge, would mean that Khalid must cough up RM70,000 in total for all 14 charges.

“We’re trying to raise the bail, we are working hard to raise bail.

“RM70,000, you know, it’s a lot of money. We hope to get him (Khalid) released today,” Arutchelvan told Malaysiakini.

Arutchelvan also said the police have given their assurance that Khalid would not be re-arrested at a later date.

“That is what we were worried about, but the police reassured us (they would not re-arrest him),” he told the news portal.

Khalid has 11 charges against him under the Communications and Multimedia Act and three charges under the Sedition Act.

He was denied bail earlier on fears he posed a flight risk.
