KUALA LUMPUR: Social security protection for taxi drivers in the country drawn up by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) is expected to be finalised by year-end, the Dewan Rakyat sitting was told today.

Human Resource Deputy Minister Ismail Abdul Mutalib said the consultation process with relevant parties on details for the scheme were ongoing.

“When the government has agreed on (details of) the social security scheme, an act would be formulated,” he said when replying to a question from Charles Santiago (DAP-Klang).

He was replying to an oral question on the government’s plan to create a social security scheme to look after the welfare of taxi drivers in Malaysia.

Ismail also disclosed that on the whole, the government had allocated a fund of RM2.5 billion through Socso to pay and sustain workers involved in accidents at the work place.
