‘Catastrophic hardware failure’ knocks out Malaysiakini

 | March 12, 2016

Website out of action since Friday, 10 days more to restore full functions.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysiakini has reported a “catastrophic hardware failure” that has caused the website to be down since Friday morning.

No foul play was believed to be involved, the management said in a notice this evening.

The site has been publishing its reports on Facebook through its English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese pages.

Since Friday morning, Malaysiakini journalists have not been able to update the website because of a failure in the content database server.

“The technology team managed to gain access but were unable to fully recover the database. The backups were also not usable,” Malaysiakini said.

It is estimated that full recovery would only be possible in 10 to 14 days. The hardware and database failure is the first that Malaysiakini has suffered in its 16 years of publishing. Previous interruptions to its operations have been the result of cyber attacks, or because of government action.
