KUALA LUMPUR: The sound of glass cracking on the second floor of a shophouse in Bukit Idaman, Selayang probably saved a pupil of the Maahad Tahfiz at-Tijarah religious school from a fiery end early today.

The 6.30am blaze destroyed the three-storey shophouse in Jalan Bukit Idaman, in which two storeys served as a hostel for pupils of the school.

A student, Amin Razali, 14, said his friend, Daniel Hakimi, also 14, who was resting in the hostel was awakened by the sound of cracking glass.

He managed to run to the surau to alert other students.

Another student, Mohd Aiman Sawaludin, 14, said the fire destroyed their belongings and some had to temporarily put up at the surau.

“We could not salvage anything as the fire spread very fast,” he said.

School founder and principal Mustapa Kamal Maulut said all students were relocated to another building nearby, together with those at the school’s head office.

A team of 15 firemen from the Selayang and Rawang Fire and Rescue Departments put out the blaze within 20 minutes.
