KUALA LUMPUR:
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Hasan Arifin is refusing to reveal the contents of his correspondence with Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) deputy governor to its committee members, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua claimed today.

“We are shocked that Hasan is refusing to show committee members the letter from BNM. The letter was written to the PAC chairman for the whole committee,”

Speaking at a press conference, he said it was the first time in the PAC’s history that a chairman had hidden information from his committee members.

“His actions are an insult to PAC members who were appointed by the Parliament.”

Pua, who is also a PAC member, pointed out that the letter dated April 6 from BNM was used as a reason for the sudden last-minute amendments to the committee’s report on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

“That was the letter he used as an excuse to delete two lines from the report.

“That’s why, the sentences mentioning BNM’s confirmation that Good Star Limited is owned by an individual not affiliated with Petrosaudi International (PSI) Limited was edited from the report without consulting PAC members.”

Pua said that the excuse Hasan gave for withholding the letter was that it was confidential and beyond PAC’s jurisdiction.

“But the PAC’s jurisdiction is strong enough. We can ask for and summon anything under the Act of Parliament (Standing Orders).

“It is up to the PAC members to decide whether it is relevant or not. But, he refused to share the letter.”

The outspoken DAP lawmaker said this had raised eyebrows about the motives of Hasan and whether the letter was purposely withheld from committee members to conceal crucial information on possible corruption in the affairs of 1MDB and PSI.

“If there really isn’t a ‘cover up’, the letter should be immediately shared with all PAC members,” he said.
