‘Hudud bill needs only a simple majority, not two-thirds’
Gerakan criticises DAP for playing down the hudud crisis and for working with PAS in Selangor Government.
PETALING JAYA: The hudud bill needs only a simple majority to be passed and not a two-thirds majority, says Gerakan Wanita chairwoman Tan Lian Hoe, who has slammed DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng for “playing down the crisis.”
“Lim should be clear that the Bill seeks to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 [Act 355] which only requires a simple majority to pass as it does not seek to amend the Federal Constitution,” Tan said in a statement today.
“It is dangerous and irresponsible of him and DAP to mislead the public and play down the crisis.”
Lim was previously reported as claiming that the Private Member’s Bill tabled by PAS’s Hadi Awang in Parliament last week required a two-thirds majority to pass in the house instead of a simple majority.
“It is hugely irresponsible that DAP blames Gerakan and MCA.
“In fact, it was DAP which tricked the Chinese voters into supporting PAS in the last two general elections. This helped unleash the monster and led to today’s crisis,” Tan said.
“DAP and its supporters only have themselves to blame if the Bill is eventually passed in Parliament.”
Tan also pointed out that three DAP Exco members were “quietly continuing their collusion with PAS” by working together with three PAS Exco members in the Selangor state government.
“It is even more upsetting to learn that DAP, despite being the biggest Opposition party, offered little or no resistance to PAS.
“As the biggest party in the defunct Pakatan Rakyat, and now Pakatan Harapan, with 37 MPs, DAP has not just failed to stop PAS from pursuing its hudud agenda, but has also hoodwinked Chinese voters into supporting PAS.
“DAP is the reason the Islamic party has become mainstream in Malaysian politics which has led to today’s hudud crisis.
