NewGen Party offers Syed Saddiq by-election ticket
The new political party wants Asia’s top debater to stand in either Kuala Kangsar or Sungai Besar under its banner.
PETALING JAYA: The NewGen Party wants Asia’s top debater, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, to stand in the June 18 by-elections under its banner.
The party tweeted late Monday that it had held a supreme council meeting to discuss the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar parliamentary by-elections.
“We are willing to appoint @SyedSaddiq as our candidate in PRK Sg Besar or KK if he is keen,” The Star Online quoted the party as saying.
Syed Saddiq, however, said he would not be taking up the offer as it would split the votes. Also, he said, he had just completed his law degree and was planning to do his masters. He said the party had yet to contact him.
“I’m humbled (by the offer) but no I will not run,” he told The Star Online.
“But what I will definitely do is go down to lobby and campaign in both Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar,” he was quoted as saying.
NewGen Party, or Parti Generasi Baru, was founded by former MIC and PKR leader S. Gobi Krishnan. Its registration was approved in 2013.
