Muhyiddin and Mukhriz free to join Bersih 2.0’s campaign
Bersih 2.0 Chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah says they must first agree to conform to the movement’s agenda, which hopes for institutional and democratic reforms.
PETALING JAYA: Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir are free to join electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0’s campaign if they can conform to its agenda, the group’s chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said.
Chin was responding to the sacking of former Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir from Umno.
“I don’t know if they want to join Bersih, but Bersih’s stand has always been that they have to follow our reform agenda,” she told reporters when quizzed during its buka puasa event.
These mandatory principles call for institutional reforms and democratic reforms in the government.
Chin pointed out that former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad was not allowed to speak on a platform during last year’s Bersih 4.0 rally because he doesn’t agree with Bersih’s agenda.
“So, whoever gets invited on a Bersih platform, they have to first agree to our principles of institutional reforms and democratic reforms. Otherwise, there’s no point talking.”
Umno President Najib Razak announced the sacking of Muhyiddin and Mukhriz for breaching party regulations due to their cooperation with the Opposition.
The party’s former Vice-President Shafie Apdal was suspended as well while awaiting a report from the party’s Disciplinary Committee.
