Gobind: Apandi never spoke to me about LGE
DAP leader’s lawyer threatens to cite Attorney-General for contempt of court over ‘final warning’ to Lim Guan Eng.
PETALING JAYA: One of Lim Guan Eng’s lawyers has threatened to cite the Attorney-General, Mohd Apandi Ali, for contempt of court after Apandi warned Lim against making public comments on his impending trial for corruption.
Gobind Singh Deo challenged Apandi for proof that he had previously cautioned Lim against speaking about the case. “I have not spoken to him (Apandi) since the day my client was charged and at no time has he ever raised any concerns with me personally over the matter until now in the press,” Gobind said in a statement quoted by Malay Mail Online.
Earlier today, Apandi had said he was giving a “final warning” to Lim, who is DAP secretary-general and Penang chief minister and who recently said he expected to be jailed and had proposed fresh elections to the Penang state assembly, which the DAP viewed as a referendum on Lim’s performance.
Apandi had said his integrity as Public Prosecutor was being challenged and that he had given a warning to Lim earlier in a statement published by The Star newspaper and though Lim’s lawyers.
Gobind said the Attorney-General could not reasonably expect Lim not to make statements on the matter given his public position. Apandi should have raised the matter with him instead of through the media.
Lim is accused of abuse of power and corruption relating to the conversion of agricultural land to residential land and over his purchase of a RM2.8 million bungalow that was alleged to be below market value. Businesswoman Phang Li Koon has been charged with abetting Lim on both charges.
