Latheefa slams BN: Stop playing down DoJ suits
It’s not a ‘normal matter’ – nothing like this has ever happened in our history, says PKR leadership member.
PETALING JAYA: Latheefa Koya, a member of the PKR leadership, has accused leaders of Umno, Barisan Nasional and the federal government of “desperate and embarrassing” attempts to play down the suits by the US Justice Department involving funds linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
She dismissed Umno supreme council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek’s statement yesterday that the US law suits were just a “normal matter.”
Latheefa said: “Let there be no doubt that nothing like this has ever happened in the history of our nation.”
The US Justice Department seeks the seizure of USD1 billion in luxury property, royalty rights, a private jet and other assets believed to have been acquired with money that the FBI claimed was embezzled from 1MDB.
Latheefa said Ahmad Shabery’s statement was “irresponsible and outrageous” and that what he claimed to be just a “normal matter” was actually the biggest seizure of assets of its kind in US history.
She said the matter involved money-laundering on a massive scale involving the purchase of yachts, hotels and a jet, paintings by Van Gogh and Monet and even a Hollywood movie.
The forfeiture suits were causing massive damage to Malaysia’s reputation and the economy, she said.
