Umno Youth exco backs out of lodging police report
Armand Azha Abu Hanifah says he had been given false information about two businessmen whom he had earlier said were involved in an alleged plot to topple the prime minister.
Speaking to reporters outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters this morning, Armand said he had only found out that the information he had been given about the duo’s involvement in an alleged plot to topple Prime Minister Najib Razak was bogus after checking with multiple sources.
“This is not a publicity stunt. If something is not genuine, we don’t report it, because it is irresponsible.
“I cannot elaborate on the matter, the document is a fake. If we lodge a police report, we will look stupid,” he said, referring to a seven-page document, he had previously claimed, contained details of the duo providing financial assistance to plotters aiming to topple Najib.
Armand had yesterday said he had been informed of the pair’s link to the alleged campaign and that he would file a report with the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.
Armand said today’s incident should set an example to others, to not lodge police reports based on information of questionable veracity.
“There is freedom of speech and the right to assembly, but it must be exercised with responsibility.
“Today, I proved that the right thing to do is not lodge a report based on fake allegations. We must hold on to our principles.”
At the same time, Armand urged members of the public to pass him information, if they had any, but vowed that he would check the information “thoroughly” before taking the next step.
