Highway closure necessary, says Penang police chief
The police forensics team need to look for more evidence to complete its investigation into last Thursday’s shooting, he says.
GEORGE TOWN: Closure of an important expressway here is necessary to ensure no stones are left unturned in police investigations into last Thursday’s shooting, say police.
Penang police chief Comm Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the forensics team needed to scour the area for any evidence that might have been overlooked.
He said although 11 spent bullet shells were collected, a thorough daylight screening still ought to be conducted.
“The other night (of the shooting), the traffic was very bad and we were unable to do encompassing forensic work.
“Tomorrow, we want to make sure of the positions of the bodies of the victims since they were spotted quite a distance from where the first shots were fired.
“We just want to conduct a more comprehensive investigation report,” Ghafar told reporters after opening the Penang branch of the Retired Senior Police Officers’ Association of Malaysia today.
On Dec 1, a businessman and two others were killed and five injured in a shooting incident on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway about 7.30pm.
A 37-year-old bodyguard to the businessman is alleged to have open fire with his pistol, killing his employer inside a car.
He also got down from the car and continued shooting, killing two passersby and wounding five others. Police have described the man to be of unsound mind.
Tomorrow, police will cordon off a short stretch of the expressway from 10.30am to 5pm to facilitate investigations. Motorists have been directed to use alternative routes to reach the Penang Bridge.
Ghafar has defended the insanity theory for the bodyguard opening fire.
“It was the first day of work for the bodyguard. It is unthinkable that you would resent your boss on the first day of work.
“How can you develop terrible anger in just one day? That is why, after investigations, we feel he could be mentally unstable.”
