After 10 sen market comes 10 sen ambulance for poor
Service is for poor folks, says man of crazy ideas Kuan Chee Heng.
PUCHONG: Kuan Chee Heng believes it only takes one crazy idea to make a change.
This is his second. This time around, he is starting a 10 sen ambulance service for the poor in Seri Kembangan, Puchong, and nearby areas.
He said the service was only for those who were bedridden and could not afford to pay for a private ambulance to go to hospital.
There will be no forms to fill or protocol to follow to engage the service. An assessment will only be made once the ambulance has arrived at the location, said Kuan.
“We will know when we get there. We will reject if the person has kids living with them but are too lazy to take him or her to hospital. We will also reject the request if the person lives a comfortable life,” he said.
He said the fee for the service was 10 sen to go to the hospital and another 10 sen for the return trip home.
Kuan is president of Community Oriented Policing Strategies (COPS), a group established some years ago to do community work.
He is also the man behind the 10 sen market COPS holds every month at the low-cost flats in Bukit Jalil.
Kuan said such programmes could help to reduce the crime rate.
“I believe in treating the root cause of the problem by getting close to the community and this is how we do it,” he said.
COPS members work on a voluntarily basis with police on crime prevention.
“The good deed is ‘saham akhirat’ (investment in the afterlife). You are not getting paid for all the good you do now but you will be paid in the afterlife,” he said
COPS has three ambulances now.
Two are newly-purchased ambulances and will serve the community in Puchong, Seri Kembangan and nearby areas. One bought last year is in service for the rural folk of Gurun and Sungai Petani in Kedah
