2 varsity students killed after car rams into tree
Police believe the car skidded off road on Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen, Kota Kinabalu.
KOTA KINABALU: Two Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students were killed after their Toyota Vios car skidded off the road before ramming into a tree near the KPD traffic lights on Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen here early today.
Acting Kota Kinabalu city police chief Supt George Abd Rakman said in the 2.40am incident, Mohd Haidil Amran, 23, who was driving, and Nur Azlina T Tan Lian Chew, 22, died on the spot.
He said initial investigations revealed that the car was coming from the direction of the city centre towards UMS.
He said the driver switched lanes to the left and overtook another vehicle in front.
“After overtaking, the driver changed lanes to the right, but he is believed to have lost control of his vehicle and skidded off the road before crashing into a tree.
“The driver and passenger were trapped in the car before both were extricated by firemen. They were pronounced dead by a doctor from Likas Hospital,” he said in a statement.
George said the bodies of the victims were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1.
In KOTA BELUD, a man was killed while seven others were injured when two cars collided along Kampung Mentanau Ulu Kukut road this evening.
A Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operation centre spokesman said rescuers had to extricate the victim who was trapped in the front passenger seat of one of the cars.
“Ambulance staff who arrived confirmed the victim had died at the scene,” the spokesman said in a statement tonight without disclosing details of the victim.
According to the spokesman, seven others who were injured in the accident were assisted out of the vehicles by passersby before the fire and rescue team arrived.

He said two fire engines and seven personnel were rushed to the scene after the department was alerted about the incident at 5.15pm today.
