‘What can PKR do if PAS wants to contest in our seats?’
However, PKR leader Dr Wan Azizah reminds the Islamist party that the sole purpose of the opposition should be to overthrow BN in GE14.
PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says it is up to PAS if the party intends to contest in seats won by PKR in the last general election.
“If they want to contest, contest lah. What can I do if PAS wants to contest?” Wan Azizah told reporters after chairing the Pakatan presidential council meeting here today.
However, she reminded PAS that the sole objective of the opposition should be to overthrow Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 14th general election.
“If there is one goal, it is to overthrow the kleptocratic government,” the PKR president said.
The press conference was attended by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president Muhyiddin Yassin, PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, DAP national chairman Tan Kok Wai and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
The PAS central committee had earlier today approved a motion to cut political ties with PKR.
PKR has been accused of working together with Amanah and DAP and was seen to be against PAS in opposing a motion brought by Abdul Hadi Awang to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act.
PAS also passed a motion urging the party leadership to consider fielding candidates in all the PKR seats, thus ensuring three-cornered contests, a situation said to be favourable to the BN.
The final decision on the motion passed by the PAS muktamar will be decided by the PAS’ shura council, the party’s highest decision-making body.
Meanwhile, deputy PKR president Mohamed Azmin Ali has apparently not lost hope that PAS would accept the principle of one-to-one fights to face BN in GE14.
He told BH Online that the sole objective of the opposition should be to bring down Umno and BN.
He hoped PAS would look at the bigger picture and help ensure the victory of the opposition.
“We need to respect others’ views and we hope to discuss this.
