Kula: Zaid’s multiple PM-designate idea practical

 | May 23, 2017

Amanah leader Khalid Samad says PM-designate not relevant now as focus is on winning GE14, so highlighting policies and manifesto more important for now.

PETALING JAYA: DAP vice-chairman M Kulasegaran says Zaid Ibrahim’s assertion that Pakatan Harapan (PH) should have multiple prime ministerial candidates is a practical idea.

“It is not unrealistic of him to say so. He was just being practical,” the Ipoh Barat MP told FMT yesterday.

“Zaid is giving his own opinion and it sounds good, but it’s for PH to meet up and decide on that issue.”

Kula was commenting on his party colleague’s remarks in his blog yesterday criticising the actions of PKR members during the party’s national congress on Sunday. They had held up placards calling for PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to be the next prime minister.

“PKR are busy proclaiming Anwar Ibrahim as the new ‘7th prime minister’, and as if that’s not enough, they have also announced party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the ‘seat warmer’ while waiting for the Chosen One to be ready to take the throne,” Zaid had said.

Zaid, a former minister, had said not every opposition supporter wanted Anwar in that position and there could be several choices put forward for PH.

“The different candidates for prime minister will make the opposition more interesting.

“These candidates can debate the election issues and we can have discussions and forums about the problems in the country. This will help the people know their PM-designate better.”

Kula questioned what would happen if PH announced a certain candidate and the individual then lost in the general election.

The component parties therefore had to be open to the idea of having other reputable candidates as options.

Meanwhile, Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said the issue on the opposition coalition’s PM candidate should only be brought up in the event PH wins the next general election (GE14).

He said it was not relevant now as the focus is on winning GE14.

“We want to highlight our policies and manifesto now,” he told FMT.

He said the policies that will guide the prospective PH government and the related promises that are made to the people before polling are more important than the individual who is going to become prime minister.

He, however, acknowledged that PKR had always championed the call for Anwar to be the prime minister.

He said there is unlikely to be any serious objection against such a move within PH.

“Even with PPBM, it looks like they seem to agree although it has not been made official,” he said.

“What we understand is that they have agreed that what we need after winning the election is an interim prime minister,” he said, adding that no name had been decided on yet.
