Right decision to expel Mara bullies, says victim’s mother
However, she hopes the 10 culprits will be allowed to continue studying elsewhere for the sake of their futures.
PARIT: The mother of one of the victims in the bullying incident at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Parit here says the expulsion of the 10 culprits was the right decision.
Nurul Kharmila Abdullah, 40, said she and the families of the other victims were satisfied with the decision taken by the Mara college appeals committee to combat bullying in schools.
“Right now, as parents, we feel happy because MRSM and Mara showed intolerance towards bullying, particularly in schools and hostels.
“This decision is more or less an assurance to the victims and other students in MRSM, aside from emboldening students who have been bullied to speak up to combat bullying which is still happening,” she said when contacted by Bernama here today.
Nurul Kharmila, who is a lecturer at a public higher education institution in Negeri Sembilan however expressed hope that the 10 expelled students would be allowed to continue their studies in other schools for the sake of their futures.
“As an educator, I hope those involved in bullying will be given counselling and a constant reminder of their misbehaviour. They blew off the chance to study at MRSM, but there are many other opportunities elsewhere, provided they mend their ways,” she said.
She said her eldest son was so traumatised that he refused to return to MRSM Parit to sit for his mid-year examination.
“Even though the issue has been settled, the victims are still traumatised by the experience and it will take time for them to overcome their fear,” she said, adding that her son was no longer a student at the college and was in the process of a transfer to an MRSM in Pahang.
On May 18, the media reported that six MRSM students aged 14 were assaulted by 10 senior students aged between 15 and 16 after refusing to lend them their football shoes.
Yesterday, Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister Ahmad Jazlan disclosed that the 10 students involved in bullying were expelled from MRSM after being found guilty.
