Nazri fearful Anwar and I best friends now, says Dr Mahathir

Mahathir dismisses Nazri's claim that he wants to take down Prime Minister Najib Razak due to disappointment over son Mukhriz's 'political failure'.

SHAH ALAM: Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Aziz’s tirade against Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday brought about a fit of giggles from the former prime minister.

According to the Pakatan Harapan chairman, Nazri’s ranting was a sign of his fear of the blossoming friendship between Mahathir and Anwar Ibrahim.

“He’s afraid, he’s quaking in his boots. Because I’m now best friends with Anwar.

“Now he’s not sleeping well,” Mahathir told reporters when met after a ceramah here last night.

Nazri, in a press conference yesterday, said he had “good feelings” seeing Mahathir and his former protege-turned-nemesis, Anwar, becoming political allies.

He said the duo, along with others in Pakatan would ultimately end up “killing each other”.

“I want it to be a slow death. It would be better if they die after the next election,” the Umno supreme council member had said.

Mahathir said of course Nazri wanted to see him and Anwar kill each other off, because the alliance has struck fear in Umno.

Meanwhile, Mahathir also rebuffed another allegation Nazri had made, that his mission to take down Prime Minister Najib Razak was motivated by his disappointment over his son, Mukhriz’s political failure.

“When I was the prime minister, I didn’t push him up (in Umno). I supported and pushed Najib up, but he (Najib) was never thankful (for it),” said the 92-year-old.

Nazri had said that Mahathir was sore over the fact that Mukhriz turned out to be a political failure, unlike the sons of other prime ministers before and after him.

“(The late Abdul) Razak Hussein has got (prime minister) Najib. Hussein Onn has Hishammuddin, Pak Lah (Abdullah Badawi) has Khairy (Jamaluddin).

“He saw his son Mukhriz go up, then come down (Umno’s leadership ladder),” Nazri had said.
