KUCHING: The Sarawak tourism, arts, culture, youth and sports ministry will try to resolve the shortage of trained and registered tourist guides in the state.

The assurance came from its minister, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who said Sarawak needed more trained tourist guides to handle the state’s growing tourism industry.

“I have yet to go into the details of the problem but I was made to understand that we are facing a shortage of tourist guides,” he told reporters at a press conference here today.

He said in order for the state tourism industry to thrive, it needed good tourist guides to explain places of interest to tourists.

“We do not want tourists to be cheated by those so-called tourist guides.

“We want our tourist guides to be properly registered and trained to provide good services to our tourists.”

Karim said he was made to understand that one of the reasons for the shortage was the costly tourist guide courses.

“It is an issue we have to look at. Some said the fees are too expensive and that is one of the stumbling blocks to get the certificate.

“If we have to subsidise it, we will subsidise it.

“If they have to go to Kuala Lumpur to get the certificate, then we will bring the courses here.”
