Rafizi tips hat to Umno MP for 1MDB query

PKR vice-president says he knows it is hard to criticise 1MDB from within Umno.

Recently, Abdul Aziz, who is among the Barisan Nasional (BN) representatives on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), submitted a question to Parliament asking the home ministry to provide an update on investigations in relation to the PAC report on the sovereign wealth fund.

Speaking at Pakatan Harapan’s “Rebuild the Nation” roadshow in Kulim yesterday, Rafizi told the audience that the tour made several stops at constituencies won by BN with a small margin in the last election.

He said many of these seats were under Umno and MCA ministers, and he would poke fun at them when he spoke there. However, he said, Kulim Bandar Baru was different.

“The MP for Kulim Bandar Baru now is Aziz Sheikh Fadzir, and among the Umno leaders and Umno MPs he is a little better because he knows that there’s something wrong with 1MDB,” Rafizi, who is Pandan MP, said.

Claiming that Abdul Aziz was being “stomped on” by his party’s leadership for daring to field the question, he said: “I will not touch Aziz because I see how difficult it is to be an Umno MP who tries to speak the truth and criticises 1MDB.”

Rafizi, himself a vocal critic of 1MDB, said it was important for voters to realise that things cannot change for the better from inside Umno.

“Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Muhyiddin Yassin, Mukhriz Mahathir and many others have accepted the fact that Umno has become rotten from the top to the bottom,” he said, referring to the former Umno leaders who are now respectively chairman, president and deputy president of PPBM.

“If we want to help rebuild the nation, we must not place any hope that this can be done from inside Umno,” he added.

“As for MCA and MIC, there’s nothing much to say. If Umno tells them to jump, they ask how high,” he said.
