Lim counters Najib’s ‘chairs’ jibe with taunt on 2013 incident

 | August 18, 2017

DAP elder politician says the prime minister did not dare repeat his ‘Are you ready for BN?’ call during his visit to Penang again yesterday.

limkitsiang-najibPETALING JAYA: In an apparent dig at Najib Razak’s “flying chairs” jibe against the opposition, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang today taunted the prime minister for not repeating his “Are you ready for BN?” cry, which reportedly backfired in 2013, when he visited Penang again yesterday.

The Gelang Patah MP said Najib, who is Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and Umno president, showed that he lacked confidence in wresting the state and even the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat by not raising the rhetorical question in his speech at the constituency held by PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

“It is significant that when he recently visited Selangor, Najib talked about Barisan Nasional recapturing the Selangor state government, but when he visited Penang, he conspicuously did not talk about recapturing the Penang state government in the 14GE (14th general election), but only recapturing Permatang Pauh,” Lim said in a statement.

The DAP parliamentary leader claimed that Najib did not dare repeat the call which he had made at a BN-organised concert in Feb 2013, featuring South Korean pop singer Psy who sang his smash hit “Gangnam Style”, for fear that the crowd’s response in Permatang Pauh would have made his latest visit a “grave disaster”.

In the event at the Han Chiang College field in the lead-up to the general election in 2013, Najib had thrice asked the crowd whether they were ready for Psy, to which they responded with a “yes” each time.

However, when he asked immediately after that if they were ready for BN, they could be heard responding with a “no”.

Lim also said Najib had yesterday opted to make a joke of the violent disruption that took place at the Nothing to Hide 2.0 forum in Shah Alam on Aug 13, which saw chairs, flares and other objects being hurled when PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad was fielding a question.

Najib had told the gathering yesterday, organised by Permatang Pauh Umno which was a dining event without chairs that, “You see, when you make a lot of U-turns, corner baring (skirting), 360-degree turns, chairs fly.”

“Luckily there are no chairs here today,” Najib had added, in an apparent reference to the admission by Mahathir, who is former prime minister and Umno president, that he had made a political “U-turn” for good in seeking to topple Najib and the BN from power.

Lim took Najib to task for not condemning the violence at the forum but apparently making a joke of it.

“The rowdy and thuggish ruckus at the ‘Nothing to Hide 2.0’ forum and the disrespect shown to the former prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, is most regrettable, but the failure of the prime minister up to now to condemn such rowdy and thuggish behaviour is doubly regrettable,” he said.
