Gloomy and bitter Deepavali for Naresh’s family
While other Hindus celebrate the festival of lights, the 15-year-old’s family still mourns his untimely death.
Their light was snuffed out with the tragic death of their son, Naresh, at their house here in Taman Klang Utama.
The 15-year-old reportedly committed suicide after he was expelled from school over allegations he had bullied and extorted from his schoolmates.
“What is there to celebrate? How can we celebrate? Naresh is no longer with us,” his grieving mother Annusia said with bitterness in her voice.
While other Hindu families celebrated the most important festival in the Hindu calendar, Thirunavukarasu said his family were continuing to mourn Naresh’s passing.
“We are still holding prayers for Naresh. It is a busy time for us in that sense. There is no celebrating Deepavali this year,” he said.
The 44-year-old factory worker has fond memories of past Deepavali celebrations, recalling how his son would always help around and clean the house to prepare for Deepavali.
“Naresh would get so excited each Deepavali.
“The whole family would also spend time visiting our relatives in Rawang and other places here,” said Thirunavukarasu, who has three daughters.
It was reported that the boy was found hanged from a ceiling fan in his house at 1.40pm on Oct 5.
Annusia said one of her daughters discovered the boy suspended from the ceiling fan.
He was already dead by the time he was taken down.
The incident left the family in despair, especially because of the shabby manner in which Naresh was expelled from school.
Kapar MP G. Manivanan, meanwhile, told FMT he had spoken to the family and would take up Naresh’s case.

“I have met the family. Certain things are under planning. We have to wait until the 16th day prayers are completed as a mark of respect,” he said.
