Khalid Samad: I didn’t insult Zamihan

 | October 19, 2017

'I was complimenting him for having a godfather. I wish I had one too.'

khalid-zamihanPETALING JAYA: Amanah communications director Khalid Samad has denied that he insulted Zamihan Mat Zin when he said the controversial preacher had a godfather protecting him.

He told FMT he would not apologise to Zamihan despite his threat of legal action.

“He has the right to sue me if he wants to, but I honestly don’t know for what because I didn’t insult him,” he said.

Zamihan yesterday issued a statement telling Khalid to either apologise or prove that he was indeed protected by an influential politician whom the Shah Alam MP referred to as the preacher’s “godfather”. He said he would take legal action if Khalid could do neither.

Khalid said his “godfather” remark was meant to be a compliment.

“It means that he is being watched over by someone, which in turn means that he has got support. What’s insulting about that?

“I wish I had a godfather, then maybe I wouldn’t have been taken to the shariah courts for allegedly teaching Islam without credentials.

“Maybe he thinks the term ‘godfather’ has something to do with God or the church. It doesn’t.”

Khalid claimed that the events which took place after Zamihan came under fire for allegedly criticising the Sultan of Johor proved that the preacher was being protected.

“After he spoke about the Johor Sultan, the director-general of Jakim (Malaysian Islamic Development Department) and a minister sought an audience with Sultan Ibrahim for him. He’s obviously protected.

“And neither of these men might even be the real godfather but working for the real godfather.”

Jakim has said it is seeking an audience with Sultan Ibrahim following the Johor ruler’s instruction to state Islamic authorities to cease all dealings with the department.

Jakim director-general Othman Mustapha recently said that he and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom would meet the ruler.

Zamihan has been embroiled in controversy since he gave a lecture in which he criticised the Johor ruler’s disapproval of a laundrette’s Muslim-only policy and described Malaysian Chinese as unhygienic.

Sultan Ibrahim subsequently ordered the Johor Islamic Religious Department to sever ties with Jakim, the agency that employs Zamihan.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has also indicated disapproval of Zamihan’s preaching. He has ordered the state’s religious department to revoke the preacher’s accreditation.
