Our focus is on GE14, not Mahfuz, says PAS

 | October 22, 2017

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says PAS will not take action against Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar as the general election could be called at any time.

PETALING JAYA: PAS will not sack Mahfuz Omar as the general election could be called at any time, says the Islamist party’s deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

He said this in response to the Pokok Sena MP’s support for his “old friends” by attending the Parti Amanah Negara national convention in Alor Star yesterday.

Tuan Ibrahim said his party would rather focus its efforts on winning the next general election (GE14) instead of dealing with Mahfuz.

“The general elections are near. We do not see the need to sack him. We want to focus on the GE,” he told FMT.

Earlier, Malaysiakini had reported that Kedah PAS had said Mahfuz will not be nominated by the party for any seat in GE14.

Kedah PAS deputy commissioner Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was quoted as saying that Mahfuz was close with Pakatan Harapan, of which Amanah is a component.

Tuan Ibrahim, however, said that Mahfuz is welcome to stay in the party as long as he wants.

“It’s up to him. He can continue to stay with PAS,” he said.

At the Amanah national convention yesterday, Mahfuz was asked if he was worried that PAS would take disciplinary action against him over his attendance at the convention to which he said if the party was politically mature, they would not do anything about it.

PAS members know better

Meanwhile, Kuala Nerus MP Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali At-Takiri said it is up to PAS members to evaluate Mahfuz’s actions and attitude.

He said this when asked if PAS would sack Mahfuz just like what happened to Husam Musa in May 2016. Husam was sacked by PAS’s disciplinary committee over complaints of misconduct against him.

However, Khairuddin said: “They (members) are smart enough to evaluate Mahfuz’s actions and attitude,” the PAS lawmaker told FMT.

He added that if Mahfuz loves PAS, he would follow the party’s direction for the next general election,” he concluded.

The presence of PAS members at the Parti Amanah Negara’s national convention yesterday took many observers by surprise.

Aside from Mahfuz, two other Kedah PAS leaders, namely Anak Bukit assemblyman Amiruddin Hamzah and Kubang Rotan assemblyman Mohd Nasir Mustafa attended the convention.

Mahfuz told reporters he had received an invitation from Amanah, and as they were old friends, he felt that it was right to accept the invite.
