Woman MP to Najib: Drop Bung Moktar as candidate in GE14

 | November 21, 2017

MP for Kulai Teo Nie Ching says Bung Moktar’s latest remarks about women are an affront to women’s dignity and if the prime minister wants to uplift women, he has to act against the Kinabatangan MP.

Teo-nai-ching,-bung-moktar-radinKUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak should not renominate Bung Moktar Radin for a seat in the coming general election if he is sincere about defending women’s dignity, an MP said today.

The MP for Kulai, Teo Nie Ching, said for BN’s Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar, a woman’s value depended on her appearance, which she described as a “disgusting” stand.

Bung Moktar should retract a remark he made in the Dewan Rakyat and apologise immediately, she added in a statement, referring to comments he made when he waded into the controversy over the wearing of headscarves at work.

Bung Moktar was reported to have said: “What is the problem in wearing a tudung? If she is a beautiful woman, even if she wears a tudung, she would still be beautiful. If she is not pretty, even if she is nude, who would want her?”

Teo, the DAP’s international secretary, said this was not the first time Bung Moktar had made disparaging remarks against women, and gave as examples his women “bocor setiap bulan” remark in 2007 and his “women drivers are slow and oblivious” in 2011.

“It is evident that his party has failed to enlighten him, or Bung Moktar is completely not educable.”

She said the government had announced 2018 as the Year to Empower Women and that in tabling Budget 2018, Najib, who is also prime minister, had listed measures to elevate the role of women in the country.

Listing the measures, she added that Najib had also allocated RM20 million for training and entrepreneurship programmes for women.

“But, his effort will seem insincere if he fails to take action against Bung Moktar who just did a huge disservice to women empowerment. Najib should start by dropping Bung Moktar as a candidate in the coming GE if he really wants to defend women’s dignity,” Teo said.
