Why is M’sia condoning cruelty to animals?

June 29, 2012

FMT LETTER: From Kim Bottomley (UK), via e-mail

I continue to be shocked and deeply saddened by the disgusting conditions in which orangutans are kept at Melaka zoo.

Captive orangutans and all other wildlife should be living in clean secure enclosures with space and plenty of varied enrichment to allow them to exhibit  natural behaviour.

There should be no real interaction with the public and to allow visitors (for their own amusment) to throw rubbish into animal enclosures.

It shows that this zoo has no interest in education or conservation and should be closed.
There is plenty of evidence that animals are being kept in squalor, in cramped unsuitable cages, uncared for.

Why are authorities who are paid to enforce the law for the welfare of these individuals doing nothing and allowing this cruelty to continue. Action shoud be taken immediately.

As the world watches, does Malaysia feel no shame?
