Be afraid, be very afraid
It is tough for members of society not to feel vulnerable now that a convicted high risk serial rapist will be walking amongst us soon.
Having just read about the Canadian authorities’ decision to deport a convicted serial rapist to Malaysia when his prison term expires this month, I found it deeply unsettling that this offender may be walking in our midst soon, strolling around in our malls, prowling the perimeters of our schools, or finding his way into our college grounds.
Even more shocking is that Canadian authorities may not warn Malaysian police or the public that there is a “high risk that he will reoffend or even kill” again.
The offender was sentenced to 24 years in prison way back in 1992 after being found guilty of 19 counts of sexual assault, 28 counts of administering a drug or noxious substance, 10 counts of various assaults and dozens of other charges, including extortion.
At the risk of sounding paranoid, is it wrong to feel that Malaysians have just been rendered easy targets to more sexual violence with the presence of this offender back in our country?
Or do we attempt at being politically-correct by welcoming the 56 year-old “divinity student” with open arms? Do we put our trust in the system and believe he has indeed been rehabilitated? Or do we let our anger fester and keep our guard up lest he turn to his old tricks again once settled in Malaysia?
After all, 24 years should be time enough to rehabilitate a serial rapist. Or is it? Is 24 years really long enough to feel remorse for wrecking the lives of all whom one has unlawfully violated, traumatised and physically maimed?
According to the Toronto Star, the judge who sentenced the offender in the Ontario court, ordered the police to accompany him back to his native country, Malaysia and hand over to the police here his extensive criminal files.
We hope that the authorities take cognisance of the judge’s order and understand that this offender poses a threat, a risk, a menace to our nation and society. If he posed such a threat in Canada, he will pose a threat to any society in which he assimilates himself into, anywhere in the world.
We should remember that the Internet was at its infancy way back in 1992 during the offender’s heyday. The world wide web in this day and age, could be a wonderland for a serial rapist who could easily tap into the not-so-private lives of his victims through any one of the many social media platforms now readily available. I shudder to even mention the dark web.
We need laws to protect us and our loved ones from sexual predators like this. There should be laws to monitor his movements and those like him when they are released from prison, or in this case, deported to their homeland.
God forbid if this offender, if he is not remorseful of his actions, decides to wreak havoc in Malaysia. We don’t need any more crazies than we already have in our midst.
So people, be afraid, be very afraid.
