As the Umno general assembly opened yesterday, Penang Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman desperately tried to secure his party position by spewing lies about the Penang government.

Zainal, like the rest of Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders, is not interested in the truth or in the lives of Penangites.

His recent tirade against the state government’s land deals is further proof to this.

A fact is a fact: Umno-BN gave lucrative land deals to developers at cheap prices

Firstly, a fact is a fact: Tanjung Pinang Development Sdn Bhd paid RM1 per square foot for the reclamation and use of land in the state of Penang under the previous BN state government.

It was allowed to reclaim about 1,000 acres of land and to later sell high-end properties now termed as “luxury living” on the reclaimed land.

Clearly, a private company profited immensely from cheap land deals with the then-BN state government.

It is therefore cunning and sly to confuse and confound the people, just as Zainal did, by using technicalities and saying this was not a land sale but land reclamation.

It is reminiscent of Prime Minister Najib Razak, who said the RM2.6 billion received into his personal bank account was a “donation” and not “corruption”.

Zainal lied about the amount of land surrendered by STP to the state government

Secondly, Zainal lied about the amount of land to be surrendered by the STP deal inked by the BN state government. In order to justify the cheap land deals by the previous administration, Zainal said that through the STP deal, the state obtained 110 acres of land.

This is an outright lie, as Zainal knows very well that when the deal was made under BN, STP was only required to surrender 68 acres of land.

When Pakatan took over, it was the Pakatan state government which renegotiated the deal and managed to double the amount of land surrendered to the state government from 68 acres to 136 acres.

From here, we can clearly see that BN made a bad deal and shortchanged the people. Zainal is now trying to lie his way out.

No one in Umno today is interested in the truth. Umno and its allies in BN are going all out to discredit the state government, even at the expense of Penangites.

To Umno-BN, winning is everything, truth is secondary and the lives of Penangites are nothing.
