Venice Beach sunbather run over by lifeguard truck

September 17, 2014

LA County lifeguards drive along Venice Beach every day, but on Monday, one lifeguard didn’t see a woman who was sunbathing, as he rushed to attend another emergency.

His truck ran the 25-year-old woman over. It was late in the afternoon, and officials say the lifeguard didn’t see the sunbather.

“People don’t go home until 8 o’ clock so that’s what’s interesting too — the beach is littered around that time. For them to not see someone is very strange.”

Local David Shreibman says this is the second time a county vehicle has run over a female sunbather in four months.

“I think the lifeguards and safety people should know there are people sleeping on the beach.”

In this latest incident the woman was hospitalised but is expected to recover.

“I’m sure they’re doing everything they can. But ya, that’s pretty surprising that would happen.”

Beach authorities say they train workers who drive on beaches, and this latest case is being treated as an accident.
