PETALING JAYA: A US judge has sentenced a 26-year-old California man to 16 years in prison for killing 21 cats.

Robert Roy Farmer had pleaded guilty last year to 21 felony counts of animal cruelty and one count each of misdemeanour battery and being under the influence, US dailies reported.

The cats began mysteriously disappearing from San Jose’s Cambrian Park neighbourhood in September 2015.

Farmer was found Oct 8, 2015 in a Home Depot parking lot, sleeping in his car with a dead cat curled up in the centre console, the Mercury News of San Jose reported.

The Santa Clara County court also found Farmer guilty of sexually abusing one that was dead.

Farmer was ordered to stay away from cats for 10 years after his release and away from the San Jose Cambrian Park neighbourhood.
