KUALA LUMPUR: The government has not received any reports on the increase in prices of goods following its decision to slash subsidies for certain items, said Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Speaking at a press conference after officiating at the Franchise International Malaysia (FIM) 2010 Expo and Exhibition here, Ismail said his ministry was keeping tabs on any price hikes since the government increased the price of petrol, natural gas and sugar, in a move called subsidy rationalisation on July 15.
“We are keeping an eye over any unnecesary price increase. My directors from every state send me reports over the matter on a daily basis,” he added.
Ismail urged the public to report to the ministry if they come across any sudden price hikes.
The minister also took a swipe at the opposition over its criticisms concerning the subsidy cuts, saying, “They (opposition leaders) only know how to protest without having any information.”
Through subsidy cuts, the government increased prices for RON95 petrol and diesel by five sen.
Natural gas price was increased by 10 sen per kg to RM1.85 while sugar price was also increased by 25 sen per kg to RM1.90.
