KUALA LUMPUR: Men’s pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik continued their fiery men’s doubles form by stunning world champions Muhammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan to book their last four place in Fuzhou today.
The unseeded duo, who ousted another top Indonesian pair, world No 5 Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto in the second round yesterday, won 21-13, 22-20 against the second seeds.
The victory comes as a major boost for Chia and Soh heading into the Manila SEA Games at the end of this month, considering it is their first victory over the veteran pair.
Mixed pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai also went through after pulling off a 21-13, 21-18 win over world No 5 pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand.
Another mixed pair, sixth seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying however, lost to Chinese world No 2 Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping 18-21, 21-13, 24-22.
The country’s challenge in women’s doubles fizzled out after Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean lost 21-15, 21-14 to world No 1 Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota of Japan.
