WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives today voted 230 to 197 to impeach President Donald Trump for abuse of power.

Today’s voting is on the first of two articles of impeachment related to abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, accusing Trump of pressuring Ukraine to announce investigations that could discredit his political rivals.

Trump is charged with “high crimes and misdemeanors”, making him only the third president in history to face removal by the Senate.

The voting comes after more than six hours of debate by Democrats and Republicans.

The New York Times reported that nearly every Democrat supported the article.
