Funnyman Allan Perera strikes comedy gold in latest revue
Comedian continues to shine as he converts political misgivings and societal issues into a stream of new jokes.
PETALING JAYA: Funnyman Allan Perera brings hot-off-the-press new work online with cheeky trolling and timely satire to raise a laugh at troubling times like these.
His latest self-penned comedy revue, ‘Laugh Your Mask off’, is poised to make a new kind of merry with race, politics and pop culture.
From witticism to zany impressions, Perera’s material delivers a sassy, topical comedy that upends and expands the nation’s sociopolitical conversation.
The three-day livestream 90-minute show began yesterday and this write-up is a non-spoiler peek at the satirical skits because revealing the plotlines and surprises will ruin the fun.
Sharp script aside, you can’t take your eyes off Perera who features as all the 10 characters with different voices and distinctive mannerisms.
The blissful brew introduces two new characters – the flamboyant and social media diva, Yabadabadoodoodeedee, and law consultant KG Lesson.
The ludicrousness of Malaysian politics is seen through Yabadabadoodoodeedee, an independent candidate for the next by-election, who will share ‘his-her’ ambition for political change in a podcast election campaign.
KG Lesson debuts as law consultant to the returning ‘Duh’ Late Debate which was aired over NTV7 in 2004.
Crowd favourite Elvis Tan, yes, the very person who secretly fed his children’s Math tuition master, Ragunathan, a Brahmin, siew yok (roast pork belly), fizzes with fun.
Tan shares his lockdown experience in three segments: The Shock Arrives, Trauma and Strife, and Drama of Life.
He also jokes with the laidback rocker Bluesman and Mr Debit Trimakasihgam and performs three parody songs – All Shook Up, Mean Woman Blues and Good-Hearted Woman.
The hyperbolically feminist Rukumani Jones a/p Thomas Thomas, chairperson and chief activist of Woman’s Always Right (W.A.R.) movement, cements Perera’s reputation as a master of weirdo characters.
Perera’s other hysterical characters, Prof Dr Fakeer Zaik and YB Saudara Kam Mung Ting, also delve into hilariously deathless banter.
In the Giggle Joke Challenge, Perera imitates former prime ministers Mahathir Mohamad and Najib Razak, and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
The audience gets to vote who among the three widely teased politicians they think is the best joker.
A good surprise comes when The Parody Man challenges the crowd and asks them which character they would like him to sing about.
Since the 2008 general election, Perera has entertained millions on social media with his matchless brand of classic homegrown Malaysian humour.
Each one of his shows has been exacting, hilariously intelligent and influential.
