3-minute preview: Doctor Strange

dr-strangeMarvel’s “Doctor Strange” could be one of the most self-contained and visually impressive entries to the franchise so far. Get up to speed with its interdimensional nature with our handy guide within.

Who’s in it and what’s it about?

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Stephen Strange, a highly specialized medical practitioner who, recovering from an automobile accident, is introduced to the Mystic Arts thanks to the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton).

She wakes him up to incredible new powers that, with the right training, he can master and use for endless good. Too bad that the Ancient One is involved in a power struggle of her own and the world could soon be a very different place once more.

A principal cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”), Rachel McAdams (“Sherlock Holmes” franchise), Benedict Wong (“Marco Polo”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Casino Royale,” the upcoming “Rogue One”).

Who’s behind it?

Continuing Marvel’s penchant for plucking genre directors and making them into mainstream names, Scott Derrickson specialized in horror with “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” “Sinister” and “Deliver Us from Evil” on his resume, all of which he also wrote.

Many consistent Marvel contributors are also involved, including costume designer Alexandra Byrne, art director Ray Chan and cinematographer Ben Davis.

Is it any good?

Following an October 20 premiere, initial impressions have been very receptive to the storyline, visual spectacular and cast performances of “Doctor Strange.” 600-plus IMDb users propelled it to an early 8.6/10 rating.

When’s it out?

A first week’s worth of general release dates include the UK and Ireland on October 25,
France, Hong Kong, the Philippines and South Korea on October 26, and Australia and New Zealand, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and the Netherlands on October 27.

The next week, it’s set to open in China, the USA, Canada, South Africa and India on November 4, but Japanese audiences have until January 27 before Strange touches down.
