Nothing makes a better pick-me-up that a piping-hot bowl of soup and noodles when one is recovering from an illness or simply wishing to keep warm when it’s raining cats and dogs outside.
And although many hawkers make a commendable enough broth, one that stands head and shoulders above the rest can be found in bustling Johor Bahru.
Called Ah Hua Kueh Teow, this restaurant serves Kueh Teow Soup embellished with juicy fish balls, slices of succulent pork and liver, a generous dollop of minced pork, romaine lettuce, and even a sprinkling of fried lard and seaweed garnish, all sitting in a broth that’s subtle in flavour and comforting to the belly.
A side of sliced red chillis and soya sauce comes with each bowl for that added kick, making this simple yet satisfying breakfast just the thing you need to kickstart your day.
If your tastebuds are itching for something extra, do get a plate of deep-fried fish cake as a side dish. Golden brown and crisp on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside, it was simply delicious and made a perfect pairing with the Kuey Teow soup.
