Hugely satisfying beef noodles at Sg Petani taxi station

Truth be told, beef isn’t exactly a staple in Chinese cuisine in the Northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. If you’ve grown up in Penang, you could probably count on one hand the number of hawker stalls operating on the island that serve beef noodles.

Luckily, when they do serve beef in any state up north, it is good. Case in point – the long-standing beef noodle stall at the taxi station in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

This beef specialty stall is manned by a Mr Tan, who is now over 80 years old. The stall was originally started by his father in 1950, with the current location being manned by Mr Tan and the brother since 1974.

Mixed beef soup with noodles, or rice.

This stall’s main speciality is noodles in soup served with slices of beef, tripe, brisket, tendon, and beef balls. This particular hawker fare is often called mixed beef soup.

However, if you’re really ravenous, you can have the soup concoction with a bowl of rice instead.

The old master has definitely got everything about this dish all figured out.

The soup is flavourful, yet not overpowering, with the beef cooked just so. The beef tendon was soft, and when enjoyed together with their unique sambal, this dish is rather heavenly.

Overall this is a hugely satisfying dish to have, doubly so on a rainy day.

Old school lunch, just what the doctor ordered.

If you find yourself in Sungai Petani, you have to give this dish a try, unless you’re not a beef-eater to begin with.
