GEORGE TOWN: The annual Penang Durian Festival, which will be held from July 5 to 7 at the Seberang Jaya expo site, is expected to attract 50,000 visitors.
State Health, Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin said these visitors would not only come from Penang but also neighbouring states.
This festival is part of the state government’s efforts to promote the fruit and boost the state’s economy, he said.
“The Penang Durian Festival has succeeded in making Penang an important hub for durians.
“Visitors can not only purchase durians at affordable prices but will find them to be of high quality,” he told reporters.
He said the durians offered would include the Musang King, Hati Merah, Kapri, Labu, Udang Merah and Duri Hitam varieties.
They will be sold at 5-20% lower than the market prices.
There will also be durian-related competitions, with prizes going for the best durian clone and the northern region’s best durian.
Those interested in taking part in the contests can contact the Penang Agriculture Department at 04-5372144.
