Japanese cuisine started in Malaysia with sushi and sashimi and thankfully over the years, grew increasingly more diverse.
Now, Malaysia is home to Japanese bakeries and cafes selling egg tarts, teppanyaki, tendon, izakaya, ramen, and even pasta and pizza.
Best of all, there are Tonkatsu restaurants here today.
Tonkatsu by Ma Maison is located at Subang Main Place.
For the uninitiated, Tonkatsu is basically breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet usually served with shredded cabbage. For those observing a low carb or keto diet, this would make a fine meal.
Salty, sweet, or slightly spicy – there’s a sauce for every component of your dish.
Tonkatsu by Ma Maison is one of the few Japanese restaurants serving Tonkatsu in the country.
When it comes to Tonkatsu, there are basically two cuts you should concentrate on. The first is pork loin, or “rosu katsu”, which is the cut with a layer of rich fat.
The second is pork fillet or “hire katsu” which is less fatty.
Miso katsu anyone?
At this restaurant there are a few sauces that complement the flavours of your meal. Here’s how you use them:
- sesame sauce for the cabbage
- raw sesame for the rice
- sweet, spicy or salty sauces for the meat
Additionally, they also provide mustard on the side (feel free to ask for more). The combination of mustard and salt with the meat is absolutely delicious.
Rice, shredded cabbage, and even the miso soup is bottomless here, so knock yourself out.
