The first trailer from the movie adapted from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical ‘Cats’ has dropped.

After Idris Elba posted a short behind-the-scenes video on his Instagram account earlier this week, Universal has now released the first trailer to the movie adaptation of the 1978 six-time Tony Award-winning Andrew Lloyd Webber music “Cats” on YouTube.

“Cats” is the silver-screen version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical inspired by the T. S. Eliot 1939 poetry tome, “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” It tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicle. One night a year, they gather for a ball during which they decide which of them will be given the key to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn to see another life.

The feature film is directed by Tom Hooper, who won the 2011 Best Director Oscar for “The King’s Speech.” Unlike in the stage version of the Broadway musical, the performers aren’t wearing cat costumes.

The British-Australian director opted to use a motion-capture technique that applies realistic cat fur to the cast, which includes Taylor Swift (Bombalurina), Jennifer Hudson (Grizabella), James Corden (Bustopher Jones), Judi Dench (Old Deuteronomy), Rebel Wilson (Jennyanydots), Steven McRae (Skimbleshanks), Ian McKellen (Gus), Jason Derulo (Rum Tum Tugger) and Idris Elba (Macavity).

The trailer also contains the musical’s most iconic song, “Memory,” as interpreted by Jennifer Hudson.

“Cats” will be released to North American theatres on December 20.
